Post-COnviction Relief

As Director of the American Bar Association’s Clemency Representation Project, Mr. Gitlen had one of the highest success rates of any attorney at securing sentence commutation under President Obama’s New Clemency Initiative. Mr. Gitlen is a leading authority on the collateral consequences of a criminal conviction and has recently helped the DC Mayor’s Office on Returning Citizen’s Affairs create the first-of-its-kind paralegal training and job placement program.


Criminal Defense

Mr. Gitlen helped secure a not-guilty verdict for an innocent man accused of homicide in Loudoun County, Virginia. This was the first homicide case the Commonwealth had lost in ten years. Mr. Gitlen is also the co-author of Federal Criminal Procedure Litigation Manual.

Trust and Estates Litigation

Mr. Gitlen represents trustees and beneficiaries settle disputes arising from the administration of a trust or an estate.


Appellate

Mr. Gitlen is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth, Sixth, and Ninth Circuits, and the D.C. Court of Appeals. He has argued a case before the Fifth Circuit, and has been on brief for published opinions before the Ninth Circuit and the D.C. Court of Appeals.
